Having travelled around the world a few times now I finally have mastered the art of looking fresh after a long travel day even when I really feel like death. There was far to many times I went onto a plane unprepared, with just my iPod and a book to keep me entertained. Being an adult now I liked to take pride in my look and to feel my best. It’s not really for anyone but myself (and maybe Instagram..). Here are some little ways you can look fresh after a long travel day!
How To Look Fresh After A Long Day Of Travel
Stay Hydrated – I like to call jet lag a flight hangover. And the best way to beat a hangover is to stay hydrated throughout the flight/train/car! When you’re dehydrated and exposed to the different air qualities your skin can freak out and become dull or breakout. Not exactly the model fresh look you’re going for. Drinking lots of water will flush out any toxins sitting in your body, plumps up your skin, and keeps your digestion functioning which will help you feel less bloated if you get into the plane snacks! Pack A Change Of Clothes – This one is my newest favourite. I was always one of those people who stuck to their one set of clothes on a long day when finally I realized how fresh and good I felt in a new set of clothes! This will keep you stylish in the airport and comfy on the plane! Packing a new pair of pyjamas or sweatpants will not only help you feel more relaxed on your long day of travel but can also help you sleep better. You can change before you board the plane or try in the tiny airplane bathroom! Or if you’re on the train try one of those but beware of the stops! Don’t want to go flying in your underwear :p
Coconut Oil – Another favourite of mine. It’s easy to find pure coconut oil in a 100ml or less container to take on the plane with you, and it can fit in your purse or bag. When buying your coconut oil look at the ingredients and make sure you can read them all. If you can’t read something – don’t buy it. Also if it says fragrance put it back. This will dehydrate your skin and can cause irritation. Apply coconut oil to your face and neck as needed and try to keep your hair off your face. I didn’t do that a few times and was left with greasy strands in my face. The oils will sink in to your skin and will leave you looking fresh and dewy!
Don’t Wear Makeup – It’s temping to wear makeup but dust and other particles will cling to your face.. It will also “melt” off and need reapplication. If you want to look Instagram ready (which honestly is the only reason I wear makeup these days – add me!) bring some face wipes and wash your makeup off once you get your photos! Something I like to do is to just fill in my eyebrows and wear sunglasses with some lip chap. It’s easy, skin friendly, and really.. eyebrows are everything so that can’t be sacrificed.
Avoid Salt – I know how hard it is to resist the munchies on the plane but if you do want to snack chose healthy alternatives like fruit or unsalted nuts! Snacking on chips, pretzels and even airplane food will not only dry out your skin but will also make you bloated. Salt retains water so by the end of the flight you may feel more swollen which isn’t the best of feelings.
Try Space Buns Or A Braid – Instead of having your hair hang in your face during your travel day try braiding it or twisting it into two space buns! This is easy to find on Youtube but the gist is divide your hair into two sides, twist one side first until it starts to bunch up and then twist that into a bun. Hold it in place with an elastic and then repeat! Once you are all done you’re done your travel day take your braids or space buns out. Your hair will be a beautiful curly mess!
Rest Up – It is so hard to get sleep while travelling but any amount of sleep will help you! Bring your eye mask, noise cancelling headphones and one of those awkward neck pillows to try to get some shut eye! Avoid caffeine and alcohol on the travel day, especially flights, and try to sleep naturally. This is where the window seat or a travel partner come on handy! Lay of one of these, tuck your feet into the basket in front of you (I’m not the only one who does that right?), and relax!
Sorry I’ve been a bit inactive on Fernweh lately. My stressful summer got even more stressful last week and ruined my creativity and writing flow I was having. Trying to get back into everything isn’t going as easy as I hoped but hopefully I’ll get into the swing of things soon 🙂
