It was not long ago that Aaron and I decided we needed a little getaway and decided to spend a weekend in Calgary. It was one of those ‘just for fun trips’. The getaway was supposed to be in Banff but I didn’t learn my lesson after my Vancouver faux pas, so everything was booked. So naturally Calgary was the next best thing. And it couldn’t have been more perfect 🙂
Calgary is right next to Canada’s famous Rocky Mountains and you can see the gorgeous snow peaked tips all around you. This gives Calgary fresh smelling air and oodles of photo opportunities. This city is usually a pit stop for many on their way to skiing in the mountains but it’s definitely a great place to have a weekend getaway.
I decided to skip the hotels when booking a place to stay and opted for an amazing condo called Ostays Mark on 10th. I had never booked a condo before so I was pretty worried about it, but it turns out my anxieties were for nothing, as usual, and Aaron could barely drag me out of there when we had to leave! You can read more about it soon when I get a post up for you. Just to give you a tease here’s the private rooftop 😉
How To Spend A Weekend In Calgary
Where To Eat
Sucre Cafe: This place was just below our condo! It was so convenient to wake up and head down to grab one of their delicious baked goods. If you watched my Instastories (add me here) or my snapchat (fernwehwolf) you would have seen that I got basically one of everything. I highly recommend a soy latte with a blueberry scone and an almond croissant. Their butter croissant it also amazing and the barista was so cute and nice! Highly recommend.
Posto Pizzeria & Bar: Again this place was right next door to our condo, so obviously when you’re two glasses of prosecco deep you want pizza so we headed down. We tried their Bonterra bread for a starter and it was sooooo good, Aaron and I fought for the 3rd piece of bread. Accompanied by bread was a ginger and elderflower cocktail which was delicious! The only thing I didn’t think was worth it was the pizza itself. I got the gorgonzola, fig, potato, radichio and rosemary which sounds amazing, but it was pretty basic I’m sad to say. But after 10pm everything on the menu is half price so go bananas 🙂
Bridgette Bar: I swear we walked more than a block but once again, a short stroll away from the condo we found our way into this cute bar. It was bigger than expected and much busier so we were seated at the bar. Aaron and I got a cocktail and I wasn’t that crazy about it but their garlic bread.. now that was good. I don’t know what is with places giving you three pieces of bread to share, like you know you’re making people fight over the bigger half, but they were a good three pieces. The potatoes were also good as well as the fries.. Carbs for days haha
Wise & Wright: After a weekend of carbs and wine I finally decided my stomach needed a break and found myself in Wise & Wright. This is a cute place that has all sorts of healthy bites, avocado on toasts and food bowls. You’ll find this small healthy stop on Stephen Street with bundles of shopping around you.
(You’ll notice I didn’t take food photos, only some snapchats if you follow me. This weekend was really for Aaron and I, so we really wanted to enjoy each others company instead of worrying about lighting for photos and stuff when we were eating 🙂 )
What To See & Do
Explore Chinatown: Exploring Chinatown has always been one of my favourite things to do no matter what city I’m in. In Calgary you will find Dragon City Mall where you can shop for delicious Japanese and Chinese food, find cute hello kitty trinkets or traditional Chinese wear.
Go Shopping on Stephen Street: This is probably one of the best shopping places in Calgary. They have Stephen Street blocked off from traffic so pedestrians are free to roam around. You’ll find lot’s of patios to grab a drink at and classic favourites like Starbucks.
Roadtrip to Banff: If you have more than a weekend in Calgary then Banff is a great day trip. You can head to the slopes early in the morning in just under an hour from Calgary.
Roam 17 Ave: 17 Ave is a great place to sit outside at one of the many cafes to choose from. If you are looking for something more natural and meal worthy then The Coup is a yummy place to try. You will also find lots of shopping options and see some cute architecture on this street.
Go up Calgary Tower: It’s hard to miss this giant needle in Calgary’s skyline. To get a 360 view of Calgary head up the tower and see the gorgeous mountains around you! I’m a sucker for nighttime views so watching the sunset from the tower and seeing the lights in the night is a great experience.
When planning a weekend in Calgary location is everything. Staying downtown is perfect for those who don’t have a vehicle. Everything is walking distance and you don’t know what you might stumble upon.
Be prepared for chilly nights. Sometimes the mountains will bring down a cold chill even on the warmer days so bring a few sweaters and jacket just incase. My bodysuit and skater dress were perfect during the day but at night I definitely needed a jacket.
Food prices can be quite steep! I paid $23 for a pizza here so just watch out for food prices if you’re on a budget
