Buen Retiro Park and the Crystal Palace
We didn’t get many sunny days on our Europe trip but when we did you can bet we took advantage of them!
While everyone was still in sweaters and jackets in Madrid I was in a lovely summer dress while Aaron was roasting in his tank top and jeans. Spot the Canadians eh?
After getting rained on the first few weeks we decided to enjoy the sunshine in Retiro Park and it was beautiful! I have always wanted to see the Crystal Palace so what better day to see it than on a warm Spanish day!
The walk to the park was only about 25 minutes from the Sol area (literally the center of Madrid) and it was a hot walk. As soon as the sun hit you I could feel the hot flash coming on so off the sweaters went – The sun felt so good! Something I never thought I would say.
The first thing I noticed about the park was these weird trees that were shaped like bubbles or something and were really neat. Then the next of course was the maze of trails that eventually led to the gorgeous Crystal Palace (Palacio de Cristal). I was so in love! I always have that one thing I’ve always wanted to see in the cities I travel to and the Crystal Palace happened to be the thing I wanted to see most in Madrid. To my surprise it was less busy that I expected and another perk was that it was free to get in! You got to love being able to just enjoy a beautiful piece of architecture without wondering about the price tag to get in.
Like most people in the park it was just really nice to spend the afternoon in such a gorgeous getaway from the city. There are a few snack/food places in the park so you can easily spend a few hours here enjoying the sun and everyones happy vibes! Maybe rent a paddle boat if you’re feeling adventurous!
I highly recommend visiting the park if you ever happen to be in Madrid! Being able to getaway from city noise without driving “out” of the city is a welcomed experience and Buen Retiro Park and the Crystal Palace was definitely a little oasis from just that!
