Dealing With A Cold While Abroad

Its happened..

 

After a year of being sick free my luck has finally run out.. In Positano no less! I know they say salt water can clear your sinuses but after testing that theory first hand on the beach I can confidently say that that is a lie. At least it didn’t work for me.. So what is one to do when they are dealing with a cold while abroad (Besides being miserable and stuffy)? Here are some little things I do to help get over a cold quickly so I can keep enjoying my trip!

Sleep – This no brainer tip is probably the most effective but also the hardest. When your nose is all clogged up and your throat is raw from breathing through it you’re unlikely to catch a few Zzz due to uncomfortableness and restlessness. I usually swear by NyQuil as a last resort but after some failed attempts to make me sleep I have started Pinteresting some natural remedies. Try some sleepytime tea (pack before hand) or reading.

 

Vitamins – I’ve noticed I always get sick when my diet is at its worst. Since I am in Italy I have been on a steady diet of pasta, cheese and gelato so now I am paying the consequences. I know when you’re sick your appetite goes but eat as many fruits and vegetables as you can! A good comfort food is a good old blueberry smoothie with coconut oil, spinach and almond milk but while abroad that may be tricky. Try to find some oatmeal and add blueberries and honey! Add some cinnamon to help detoxify.

 

Water water water – You need to drink litres of water a day to help flush everything bad out! Personally when I get sick I can’t imagine drinking water because I don’t crave it so I force myself to chug water even when my nose is clogged and I look like a fish gasping for air.

 

Magic Tea – A few times a day make yourself a ginger, honey and lemon drink. The ginger and honey soothes the throat and the lemon helps you detoxify and flush out any unwanted junk in your body. Add some cinnamon and turmeric for a soothing elixir.

 

Limit Caffeine – I personally cannot not drink coffee. I love it. It is a comfort to me but when I’m sick I tryyyyy to have only two glasses because it is very dehydrating!

 

Get Outdoors – The last thing you probably want to do when you’re sick is leave your bed but getting a few hours of fresh air will help with your stuffiness and get you away from your contaminated hotel bedroom air.

 

Long Hot Showers – Or bath. Sit in a nice steamy shower and let the hot water hit your back and it will hopefully relieve any phlegm and back aches!

 

Garlic – Eating garlic is the oldest trick in the book! It has antibacterial, anti fungal and anti-inflammatory properties! Roast some garlic, add it to broth, etc.

 

Rest Up – Sleeping is one thing but if you feel like you need to lay down then lay down and relax! Make yourself a cup of tea, put on some Netlifx, and let nature do its course!

    The worst about having a cold while travelling is that we feel like staying one day in a hotel will be a waste of time – but by pushing ourselves to go out we just make it worse and ruin all of the holiday we have. Cold is cold. We cannot magic it away.

      It’s such a hard toss up of a choice when you’re sick. To stay in or not to stay in. Exactly we just need to listen to our bodies :] Thanks for commenting!
