On a weekend trip to Banff we drove to now one of my favourite scenic spots – Lake Minnerwanka or “Lake of the Spirits.” A short drive from Banff City Centre the lake is a close rival to Lake Louise. You never really think of your own country as being amazing when you start comparing it to places like Paris or London but after walking out onto the frozen lake being surrounded by mountains and wildlife I couldn’t help but marvel at its an underrated beauty.
In the summer it is known for boating, diving and hiking and in the winter the lake becomes a frozen deck you can walk around on (weather permitting the lake is thick enough.) I’ve also read it’s a great spot for viewing the aurora borealis since there is low light pollution and the photos look amazing with the snowy mountains in the background. It was quite cloudy and rainy when we were there so we didn’t get a chance to catch the northern lights. Still, I think it’s worth the quick trip to spend a few hours enjoying the scenery.
