Tropical Mermaid Smoothie Bowl Inspired By Bali

Ah the tropics..

Not too long ago I decided that I will be spending my birthday in Bali! I am more than excited! I actually have the jitters because Bali has always been one of those places that I have been obsessed with for years. The fruit, the beaches, the sunsets and sunrises, the healthiness and all those magical retreats you can go on.. sounds like bliss to meee!

I always find myself Pinning away recipes and tropical destinations so I was inspired to make a tropical smoothie that even a mermaid would love! If it didn’t disintegrate in the water that is.

Why I call this a Mermaid Smoothie Bowl is because of one ingredient that is found in the water.. It’s algae!

You’re probably thinking, “ew. no,” but hear me out. Blue-green algae, which I recently discovered, is one of the most nutrient dense food on the planet! It is also called spirulina and you can’t even taste it in the smoothie. From what I’ve read about this naturally growing algae is that it’s packed with vitamins. You’ll find vitamins such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins and iron and others that would take too long to list! A vegetarian’s dream to say the least! And about 60-70% of spirulina’s weight is made up of protein. Pretty cool.

It is also high in antioxidants which we all know is awesome. And blue- green algae has been shown to lower blood pressure, improve sports performance and endurance and helps with blood sugar control. I hear it’s also great for the skin.

And it makes your smoothie a tropical ocean colour.

1/2 cup frozen mangos
1/2 cup frozen pineapple

1/2 tsp blue-green algae powder (optional but give smoothie its colour)
1 cup almond milk
ice to desired thickness

Directions:

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend away! Make it as thick or as thin as you like. It’s your smoothie after all. I topped mine with dragon fruit, strawberries, toasted coconut and granola. Sooooo goooood!
